There's a short story by Edgar Alan Poe called "The Gold Bug." Before I read it, I had something like this in mind, but , of course, the story only turned out to be some pedestrian thing about greed.

(Kjola, the sort of critter in the picture, actually aren't susceptible to such minor threats.)

Yes, and there was one flaw in the logic: The detailing of how the cryptogram was exciphered was based on letter frequency of FRENCH ! The editor ,going over the first drafts, hasted to point out that most of his readers would not grasp the French tongue, and so the decoding had to be redone in ENGLISH. This was done, but the decoding, based on letter frequency, was now skewed and awry, not jibing with the message. It did yield the curious statement of "a good glass in the Bishop's Hotel...."and so it went.

Letter frequency ,esp. when a computer handles the task of counting and sorting, can identify the language of a encrypted message. This failed with the mysterious Book of Bacon (Voynich Manuscript) and suggested Polynesian -a language that would hardly be known to even the most far-traveled European of medievel days. The book may be a hoax or the work of a lunatic. Likewise the Beale papers and others have stubbornly resisted exciphering...

In my own fanfic,in the last book, a mysterious code that had resisted exciphering for some 500 years, was a key to understanding why Sephira was created. The fate of the cosmos was at stake !

A coded diary is also pivotal in Lovecraft's Mythos tale, THE DUNWICH HORROR. The translator almost lost his sanity when he finally cracked the code -and read it !

Wow, this seems completely out of character for you. I didn't know you did, uh, niche stuff too.

I do, but DA isn't thepreferred place to show it -- I already belonged to FurAffinity and joined DA largely so I had a place to send the "squares." I wanted to be able to show art to SF fans who might not approve of bizarre fixations like statuary festishes. If you want to see more of this sort of thing, FA (with over 1100 posts) is where you'll find it. I also have a large display of ASFS stuff at Pygmallion Syndrome, including things I wouldn't even post at FA...

1100? I am impressed. Hey, do you know what's up with the "no new members" on FA thing? I keep getting questions about it...

I don't know anything about *that.* There was no notice of it that I ever saw. Why don't you just try to join -- that ought to settle the issue.

I did, the page that appeared was blank save for one line "We are not currently accepting new members." It'd be almost mysterious if it wasn't such BS.

Well, people try to blitz these sites from time to time -- out of spite, stupidity or plain malice. Maybe that's what you saw -- somebody's attack on FA?

You'd think they'd have fixed it by now... I'm guessing the site infrastructure can't handle anymore users; Good thing we got in while the getting was good. =D
