Shirly, White Huntress

A long, long time ago, before Steven Spielberg ruled the Earth, and George Lucus ruled the Heavens, there was an artist named Dennis Stahl. He used the pen name "Pete Moss" at times, mainly for his mail order comics I think. I learned about his in 1987 when I spotted a tiny ad for one of his books in The Small Press Comics Explosion. It caught my eye for a number of reasons -- it showed a young girl in a pith helmet, up to her shoulders in quicksand while she gave a pitch for somebody's mail order comic book.

I thought this was pretty funny. Also, I had never known another artist who was "into" this sort of thing. So far as I knew, I was the only one... and I'd been doodling girls in quicksand for more than 20 years by 1987. I guess I was sort of lonely...

This impressed me so much that I immediately copied the ad onto paper and drew a little story around it. This has never been seen before -- NEVER -- not even by Dennis.
